Lessons per Week
Topics Covered in Term 2
- Students will have the opportunity to focus on the history of European interests from the 16th to the 18th This will allow students to understand the formation of RAK and its relationships with other emirates, Sharjah in particular. Students will also explore the conflicts that had taken place during this period of time.
Skills Developed
- Making links between subjects; making decisions based on evidence; understanding historical and social contexts and change; empathy; cause, effect and consequence; respecting cultural sensitivity and diversity; classifying information; developing awareness of time and place.
- Making connections with the local community by studying the development of RAK from the past to the present.
Literacy and Numeracy
- Students will have the opportunity to develop their numeracy skills by reading and interpreting graphs, maps, data and making calculations using a variety of information.
- Students will have the opportunity to develop their literacy skills by defining key terms and ensuring they are being spelt correctly through checks, developing points using paragraphs, structure strips to complete exam style questions.
Cross Curricular Links
- Social Studies at RAK consolidates knowledge from across the curriculum including maths, English language, English literature, history, geography, global citizenship, art, music, and theory of knowledge.
Extra-Curricular
- Students will have the opportunity to visit Sharjah Museum where they will focus on pottery restoration. The pottery the students will be conserving is from the local area of RAK, Sharjah and Dubai. This will provide students with the opportunity to do some ‘hands on’ history and they will be able to use the physical objects as a way of connecting with the past.
- ‘This Week in History’ is document that is shared with students every Monday in form time. ‘This Week in History’ focuses on all of the big events that happened in the upcoming week as a way to make students to reflect and observe past events. The document focuses on different themes each week, but a reoccurring theme is the local history theme ‘RAK History’. This provides students with the opportunity to engage more with the history of RAK as well as seeing what other key events happened around the world in the week ahead.
Home Learning
- School project with the local community. The Academy is currently in contact with a local team of archaeologists. The aim is to create a community archaeology dig where, local archaeologists and students participate in a dig and then showcase their findings to the community of RAK.
- Promote Ras Al Khaimah to tourists by focusing on the history of RAK; interview family or friends from the local area to gain an insight into local history and also to be involved in Oral History.

- The UAE Ministry of Education supplies a course textbook which is given to all students.
- Suggestions for further reading/research across a variety of formats will be provided where appropriate.
